Tsunoda will almost certainly not get a chance at Red Bull, says Mitchell. The Race columnist Scott Mitchell weighs in on Yuki Tsunoda`s career prospects and his chances of getting promoted.
Red Bull has not yet decided what the rosters of both teams will look like next year - this decision will be made by the owners at the end of the season.
However, at the moment he believes that it will be decided to part with Sergio Perez, and Liam Lawson will become Max Verstappen`s teammate at Red Bull, and not Yuki Tsunoda. The Japanese`s partner in the Republic of Belarus will be youth program pilot Izak Adjar.
This is what Red Bull boss Christian Horner said about Tsunoda:
In terms of speed, we see that he can really be very fast. Now he has also gained experience and makes fewer mistakes. All factors will be taken into account when deciding on the driver lineup. We will weigh everything carefully at the end of the season. The priority is to decide which path we will take with Sergio Perez. And of course, you always have to remember that given the level of pressure, being Max Verstappen`s team-mate is probably the toughest task in Formula 1.
Mitchell, in turn, highlights the factors that will almost certainly prevent Tsunoda from getting into Red Bull:
Horner`s answer mainly talks about Tsunoda`s merits, but the last line about the pressure you feel working in a team with Verstappen seemshints at what exactly causes Red Bull the greatest doubts.
Red Bull does not believe that Tsunoda will be able to perform at his best on a consistent basis, performing alongside Verstappen. They fear that under pressure he begins to make mistakes, that he loses his cool too much when communicating with the team on the radio - and this is happening even now, when they have made it clear to him that he needs to improve in this aspect.
Another suggestion is that the technical feedback was not good enough and that it was not as impressive as Daniel Ricciardo`s when he was still driving for the team.
Tsunoda has no problems with speed - and ironically, this is why when comparing Yuki and Lawson with each other, Liam does not have a minus. Red Bull considers Tsunoda a good reference for Lawson to better evaluate him, especially given the difference in experience. And Lawson has many other characteristics that Tsunoda does not have.
Unfortunately, for Yuki, all this most likely means that despite consistently good performances and a well-deserved chance to prove himself at Red Bull, he will ultimately never get that chance. And without a future in Belarus, Tsunoda will leave the Red Bull system at the end of the next season - and Honda will leave to work with Aston Martin at the same moment.
By the way, the approaching end of cooperation with Honda may also be one of the reasons why Red Bull doubts inviting Tsunoda to the main team.
Where Tsunoda will ultimately go is not yet clear. The Aston Martin seats are filled by Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll, but other teams - such as Haas - showed interest in Tsunoda before Red Bull confirmed his contract until 2025.
